Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers are a great way to elevate the aesthetic appearance of your smile. Veneers are used for a variety of cosmetic corrections and are intended to help patients whose teeth are irregularly shaped, discoloured, or have endured extensive damage.

At Ratan & Singh, our aim is to preserve as much of your natural smile, while ensuring exceptional long-term results through the use of high-quality materials, advanced technology, and exceptional attention to detail.

What are Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made, natural-looking sheets of porcelain that are securely placed over the front surface of your teeth to mask its natural colour, shape, or positioning in your mouth. They are designed to act in exactly the same manner as your natural teeth, but with the added benefit of an enhanced appearance.

You can choose to get a single porcelain veneer for one affected tooth, or multiple veneers depending on the extent of the damage or how much you’re looking to enhance your smile.

How much do Porcelain Veneers cost in Cape Town?

The costs associated with getting porcelain veneers can vary based on a number of factors:

  • The material you choose for your veneers. Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite veneers. This is attributed to its superior quality, durability, strength, and lifespan.
  • The location of the tooth/teeth receiving the veneers. It is generally more expensive to have a porcelain veneer applied to a front tooth as opposed to one that is less visible.
  • The number of teeth receiving porcelain veneers.
  • Every case is different and it’s generally advised to consult a dental specialist for a quote that is tailor made for you.

While cheaper veneer options may seem appealing, it is important to get your veneers done by an experienced dentist. Cheap veneers can often lead to a variety of issues such as:

  • Ill-fitting veneers which are not only uncomfortable, but will require several extra dentist visits to reshape the veneer
  • Cheap veneers are more prone to chips, cracks, and other damages. This may lead to ongoing dentist visits, costly maintenance, or, in some cases even replacements.
  • Due to the lower quality of the veneers, it will result in a less natural looking smile.

Why get Porcelain Veneers?

  • Discoloured, darkened, and stained teeth
Porcelain veneers are a great choice for those looking to brighten their natural smile but need more help than whitening toothpaste or strips can offer. Porcelain veneers are constructed in such a way that they hide the discolouration of the affected teeth completely. Allowing them to blend in perfectly with your non-affected/healthy teeth
  • Irregularly shaped teeth
Porcelain veneers can help correct/mask teeth that are crooked, irregularly shaped, or improperly positioned. The end result is an astoundingly even set of teeth that look perfectly aligned.
  • Irregular gaps between your teeth
While some individuals claim their gapped teeth as a unique quirk, others are incredibly insecure about them. If you happen to be one of the latter, getting porcelain veneers may be the answer to your life-long insecurity. With porcelain veneers, dental specialists are able to fill the gaps and make your teeth look naturally spaced.
  • Malformed & damaged teeth
Porcelain veneers are ideal for individuals with chipped, broken, cracked, mismatched, extensively damaged, or severely worn off teeth (due to progressive wear and tear from aging and/or other circumstances).
  • Great alternative to dental crowns
Veneers are a great alternative to dental crowns. A key advantage is that they are less likely to show discolouration where the restoration meets the gum line. As porcelain veneers last longer, are relatively cheaper and comparably painless (compared to other dental procedures) to install, they are a great choice for dealing with a number of dental issues.

How do Porcelain Veneers work?

At our boutique dentist we pride ourselves on customizing the process to each individual client. First, you will come in for an initial consultation where we assess the condition of your teeth to determine whether veneers will be the best option for you. From there we will discuss a plan going forward.

If any other problems are detected during the initial consultation process such as the need for fillings or dental implants, those will need to be taken care of first before proceeding.

The application process of porcelain veneers involves two main steps, preparation, and bonding.

  • Preparation: The preparation process involves shaving off a very thin layer of enamel (typically ½ a millimetre) form the surface of your tooth. This process is normally performed under local anaesthetic to numb the area. We will then take an impression of your teeth to create a temporary set of veneers and ultimately your custom-made set of permanent porcelain veneers. The temporary veneers essentially act as a ‘trail period’ which allows you to test the fit, identify any issues and whether you would like any changes to be made to the shape or colour. Once your final porcelain veneers have been sculpted, they are ready to be applied!
  • Bonding: First your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned before a bonding cement is applied. Once the tooth is in the perfect position, the bonding cement is exposed to a special light beam that hardens the cement, locking the permanent veneer securely in place. The final step in the binding process involves removing any excess cement from between the teeth.

Getting porcelain veneers is a fairly simple, non-invasive procedure which can give you a brand-new smile in as little as 2-3 weeks.

What are benefits of Porcelain?

Dental veneers can be made from either porcelain or resin. Porcelain is highly favoured for creating veneers because of its durability and strength. If porcelain veneers are well looked after by means of professional care and regular maintenance, they can last for up to 25 years or longer. Veneers made of composite material (resin) are less durable than porcelain and need to be replaced more often.

Another advantage of porcelain veneers is its ability to reflect light and match surrounding natural teeth. The porcelain material can be tinted to the exact shade of whiteness that best suits your complexion and compliments your surrounding teeth. This ensures that a natural looking smile is always maintained despite having dental work done. Recent advances have further allowed veneers to possess the same translucent quality present in real teeth, resulting in even brilliant white smiles appearing more natural.

Can anyone get Porcelain Veneers?

While veneers are regarded as one of the least invasive cosmetic dental procedures, that does not mean everyone can get them. Dentists conduct a thorough examination of patients before approving them for veneers. There are a variety of factors that preclude individuals from being good candidates.

Porcelain veneers may not be recommended in the following instances:

  • Insufficient tooth structure or significant structural tooth damage: If there is not enough enamel for optimal binding to take place porcelain veneers will not work. Porcelain veneers are only successful in the long term if their tooth preparations are into enamel. This is because the strength of the bond at the tooth-veneer interface is far stronger than it would be to the underlying dentine.
  • Poor oral hygiene or if you have an excessive number of cavities.
  • If your teeth are angled too far facially.
  • If you suffer from any form of active or recurrent gum disease.
  • If you have severely maligned teeth or extremely large gaps between your teeth.
  • If you have parafunctional habits such as habitual jaw clenching or grinding of teeth.
  • Suffering from a severe crossbite or underbite.
  • Severe tooth crowding.
  • Labial version of the teeth.

If you have any of these conditions, discuss it with your dentist first before proceeding. If porcelain veneers aren’t an option, the dentists at Ratan and Singh will recommend an alternative solution that will be better suited to you.

How long is the recovery process and what can you expect after?

Once your permanent porcelain veneers have been applied, you will likely experience some discomfort and soreness in and around your gums and mouth for a few days after the procedure. You may also experience some tooth sensitivity from the bonding cement. This discomfort is entirely normal and will ease as your mouth heals. If the pain and discomfort continue to worsen over time, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

The total recovery time for porcelain veneers varies from person to person and is directly correlated to the amount of dental work that was done.

How long do Porcelain Veneers last?

One of the main advantages of porcelain is its durability and strength. If porcelain veneers are well looked after by means of regular maintenance and professional care, they can last for up to 20 – 25 years. After that point, you will likely need to get a new set of veneers due to the regular wear and tear on your teeth. However, if one of your veneers get damaged before the 20 – 25-year mark is reached, it can be replaced individually. It is important to note that the better you take care of your teeth, the longer your veneers will last.
